Establishing a single method for ascribing impact significance in environmental assessment in South Africa

Sean O’Beirne of SE Solution and a longstanding IAIAsa member is looking at the status of ascribing significance in environmental assessment in South Africa. The observation that after 27 years of formal EIA in South Africa, we still do not have a single accepted method for defining impact significance. Sean has prepared a document outlining a proposal for working toward a more standardized approach which is attached below.

The IAIAsa membership in general shares Sean’s concern and has through its past events been in discussion around the subject for some time. The initiative is supported and we request the involvement of all those in the sector who understand and work with this concept to participate in the process to improve.
